Final Wrap up: 3.5/5
So I read What Waits In the Woods by Kieran Scott before i read this one, What Waits in the Water. And i LOVED What Waits in the Woods. It has to be one of my favorite books of all time. So, naturally I expected this one to also blow me away. I’m not saying it’s bad I just don’t think it was on the same level as the last one. The writing was much more predictable and I saw the “big plot twist” coming way before it was revealed. Also the main character was SO ANNOYING! She had such a “i’m not like other girls” attitude. There were some things i really liked in this book though! I didn’t see the second, more minor plot twist coming. It actually surprised me. And I liked that this book was a lot more diverse than What Waits in the Woods. I do wish that the twist was less obvious but overall i did like this book!

Age rating: 12+

possible trigger warnings: drowning, death (happens on page), suicide (mentioned), blood, panic attacks. (there may be others i didn’t mention please look them up too)

Thank you!

I really enjoy ya thrillers anyway, so I was excited to pick this one up.

As always, Kieran Scott’s writing is fabulous. She’s great at writing gripping page turners that are difficult to put down. I also liked Hannah as a character. She’s relatable and wants to do the right thing, but doesn’t come across as a goody goody. I liked that both she and Katie showed character growth.

The mystery was pretty good, though I did guess the identity of the culprit. It was still fun to watch everything unfold. I also enjoyed journal entries interspersed between chapters - so the reader and Hannah can connect the dots together.

This was a haunting teen story and I really enjoyed it - somewhat chilling but a well-written story!

A 2019-2010 Missouri Truman Readers Award preliminary nominee.

Hannah is excited to finally be visiting her best friend Jacob's lake house, even if she had to bring her stepsister Katie along. But things get off to a bad start when it becomes apparent that Katie has feelings for Jacob, and he might reciprocate those feelings, and the lake is actually a little spooky.

This was a really quick read for me. It was not bad for what it was. I wish it had a little more depth to it.

I genuinely felt scared when reading this book, at least for the first bit. But it just started to get a bit dull and predictable towards the end. I would recommend this more for someone who is new to thrillers and hasn’t figured out the formula yet.
