This was a book club pick for May and my first du Maurier.

I haven't seen Hitchcock's film version/interpretation, so I went in with a blank slate for the story itself. The Birds was a quick read and honestly, very vivid and memorable. I'm not sure if any of us could do much better than Nat and his family if we were in the same position.

I love birds, I think they're amazing creatures. But we should never underestimate how clever they are and how dangerous they could be against humans (and some are) if they wanted to. Nature is powerful and we are not the only ones living here.

The imagery throughout the story reminded me of another bird-themed horror story adaptation I saw about 1,5 years ago – The Murmuring from Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. So for fans of The Birds, I'd also recommend checking that one out.

Guess I'm not a huge Daphne du Maurier fan. I kept wanting more details and back story. This was short and sort of vague. Like why were the birds attacking? Who survives? What happened to Nat Hocken during the war?

Right, so it's an older short story, but du Maurier *delights* in the horror. There were slow moments, but the skin-crawly feeling that I got when reading about Nat piling the bodies of the dead birds up against his windows as an extra barrier for the next attack was just brilliant.

The short story differs from the film in several ways but at the core of both "BIRDS BAD!".

This book. Wow! I loved it. I loved the pacing, the fear and the bleak ending. Did they survive didn't they? What will happen next? Honestly I'm glad I got the chance to read it.
