I can imagine plenty of young teen girls enjoying this: the privileges of the rich, the unfamiliar glamour of the whole debutante ‘scene’, the mystery, the screaming etc and it was certainly well-written and gripping enough to keep me reading.
I admit I’m not the target demographic reader but my overall view is that it’s just not all that.
I appreciate the fact that there’s little that’s ‘unsuitable’ for a younger teen audience and I like that all those elements considered so important by the well-groomed Southern ladies, are to some degree sneered at by Sawyer, the narrator. However, I think the glamour and wealth are still presented in a positive light on some level which is a shame.
Would I like to know how the story plays out in the second book in the series? Yes
Will I read the second book to find out? Unlikely… I’ll find a review that tells me all I need to know!
Will I buy this book for my school library? Undecided… I might try borrowing it from the local library first and see what a few readers of the age it’s aimed at make of it.
