Gatto is completely on the right track about the need to go back to family.
While getting my MEd, because I wouldn't be allowed to keep teaching without spending another $20,000 retaking classes and rereading books I encountered in my BA, the overall message was, "Teachers need to take over for parents. Parents can't be trusted with their own children; you need to take over!"
If I had encountered this book earlier in my teaching and parental career, I would probably have rated this higher. At this point, I teach for a homeschooling group and homeschool my own daughter, so I'm a member of choir having already been converted.

Halfway through I was sure this was going to be a 5 stars review but unfortunately, some ideas ended up being repeated several times in the exact same words, which could be easily solved, and some views on how communities should work, by the end, were questionable, in my opinion. That's the only reason why that half star is missing because otherwise, everything John Gatto has to say about schooling not only makes perfect sense but is explained in a way that's easy to understand and communicate. This has definitely made me even more certain that when I have kids, I'll do all I can to homeschool them.
