There it is! The story picks up a great deal more in this volume and delves more deeply into the types of strange and wonderful worlds that characterize Hatke's other books. The goblins are a welcome addition here, and the main characters have a chance to really shine. A lot of lovely and deep stuff happens with both Jack and Lilly, and I am very excited to see where this series goes next, particularly because Hatke's entire body of work seems to be converging. There is a very welcome cameo at the end of this one that has me excited about future possibilities.

*Mighty Jack and the Goblin King by Ben Hatke is just as good as the first one, and I love the world that Hatke has created for Jack, Maddy, and Lilly. The creatures are so creative and interesting, the adventures are heart stopping, and the characters are so well developed. And GUYS! There is an epic cliffhanger ending! I cannot wait!

Always seem to find these books out of order but will be definitely be going back to complete the series!

Reluctant readers will love Mighty Jack and the Goblin King. It’s 80% action, 20% dialogue and story. However, it does pick up right where Mighty Jack left off (from what I can tell - because I forgot EVERYTHING that happened in Mighty Jack.) I loved the girl power in this book and the ending was fun. I can’t wait to see what will happen next! (And I’ll reread books one and two before I read three!)

Amazingly, I enjoyed this MORE than the first!! Initially I only read it because the first book ends on a cliffhanger. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this second installment is filled with interesting plot twists and nonstop adventure. Super quick read, vibrant full color illustrations, what's not to love?

Fun, solid adventure by one of the masters. Many of Hatke's books include unending surprises - new creatures, new worlds, and this had less of that then I wanted.
But it was breezy, fun, loved the suspended world.

I really enjoy this series and everything else by Ben Hatke. This is a solid continuation of Mighty Jack's story, with even more fantasy elements and fantastical creatures, and I am in love with the character development. Jack himself, his feisty friend Lilly (that's right, 3 Ls!), and his sister who hasn't spoken a full word in years, are in embroiled in a conflict of ages: a power struggle between worlds and creatures. There are duels, harrowing escapes, rescues, explosions, and betrayals. Oh and REALLY REALLY cute goblins!! I can't wait to get my hands on the published copy and see the full color spreads. Thanks, First Second books!

-I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own-

Cute stuff. A good continuation from the last book, but it feels a little rushed. I'd have liked to see them do a bit more once they went through the gate, maybe explore a little rather than running full blast through the plot. Still very fun and cute (lots of adorable goblins!) with a good core story. Hopefully we'll get more in this world!

Within two hours of opening the package with this book in it, my daughter (7) had read this twice and I'd read it once. We both loved it. Ben Hatke does it again.
