Much darker than the first series! It was good... but the formula (even with a new twist) is getting a little old. I might finish the series but I won't rush to do it.

Still loving the smattering of history dappled into these short little books.

With this spin off series, the 39 clues books have become darker and more intense as Dan and Amy fight to unite the Cahills in a struggle against the Vespers. The Vespers are proving to be as ruthless as the Lucien branch and you wonder if they will prove to be in cahoots. Amy is growing up and away from Dan, as siblings tend to do, leaving him to wallow in his depression. He hasn't been able to put the clues behind him as easily as she has. We are now bringing in more people who aren't Cahills by blood and we're left to wonder if they will make the family better or more like the Vespers?

Woof. Okay. I thought the end of the 39 Clues series was getting a bit serious, but this just ups things significantly. Two years after they solve the 39 Clues mystery, Amy and Dan Cahill face up against a new and far more ruthless enemy: The Vespers. Not a family (though there may be something of a family line in the top leadership), but a collection of imminently accomplished people, all determined to solve their own little mystery. And some of these people...are Cahills, themselves.

After a string of Cahill kidnappings, Amy, Dan, and a few of their Cahill allies must work together to earn their loved ones' freedoms. Their first task: high-profile art heist. The penalty for failure? One of the kidnapping victims will be killed.

I was particularly interested in this book because it seems like the series will be focusing on more "ugly" art. The picture to be stolen is a work by Caravaggio, who is a master of the grotesque. If the rest of the books highlight messed up composers and the like, I am going to be so into this.

My 10yo really enjoyed this book-as in, he kept bugging me to read it to him, and he is not that big of a fan of reading! He liked the action and mystery, and there is a website that corresponds to the books which he is exploring. Anything to get my kiddo interested in reading!
