Ugh. I finally finished. That was a bit of a slog! This Temperance Brennan books starts off with the discovery of a dead teenage girl, apparently killed in a hit and run. She's holding a card that belonged to a man who died in a fire months earlier. There's also the matter of a war vet who has smuggled mummified dogs (!) into the country. Suddenly, that all gets abandoned in part two, as Tempe treks off to Afghanistan to exhume the remains of two men killed by a soldier. The soldier has been accused of straight out execution as opposed to self-defense.

Of course, this being a Kathy Reichs book, we know that all of these elements are going to tie in together somehow. But the process of getting the information really was a bore! Waaaaay too much of this book is dedicated to Tempe's daily routines, and monotonous descriptions of where she travels to and where she stays. Practically a whole chapter was devoted to Tempe's trip home from Afghanistan and all the flight delays she experiences. Realistic, I imagine, but really effing boring to read about! Very little actually happens in this book! Indeed, it requires a 13 page epilogue to explain to us how everything connects together! Perhaps some of that could have fell into place earlier? As it is, it all still felt very jumbled and all over the place.

Unfortunately, I was bored, bored, bored reading this book and got a lot of naps out of it. Tempe's judgmental comments on just about everyone, the tediously described minutiae of her daily routines, the haphazard plot and the excessive travel descriptions land this clunker towards the bottom of the pile of Brennan books. There's only a couple more to go, so hopefully those are better than this!

I've read a fair few of the Temperence Brennan books and this latest was along the same vein. |Although the formula works for each story, after a while it can become a little stale and predictable. BUT, having said that, each and every one of these books has me gripped from the first page.

This particular story gripped me because of the prologue. For once it wasn't Tempe, trapped in a room, waiting for the cavalry to arrive. No, in this prologue, she was KICKING ASS! I don't want to give too much away, but I love that side of her.

As usual, Reichs weaves Brennan's personal life into her work life seamlessly, and it never once felt overdone or cliche, particularly when she gets to have coffee with her daughter, Katy. I enjoy the way Reichs does this, and it makes me connect more with Brennan and make me want to read more about her.

I admit, I was a little sideswiped by events in the final few chapters revolving around Tempe's private life as I'd missed a couple of the books, but I soon caught up and my mouth dropped a little at some revelations and actions of a couple of characters.

If you've read any of the Temperence Brennan books previously, this won't disappoint, I just felt it was a little too samey in places.

Bones of the Lost is just ok. It was odd because Temperence jumpped from the US to Afghanistan back to the US, and while Reichs does tie everything together in the end, it was just odd. Tempe was dealing with the girl's body, the mummified dogs, bones in Afghanistan, a poo-poo skul. It was just a lot, though the case load isn't new for Tempe, I think the jump in countries and cases was just a little much. Also, Tempe is dealing with a lot personally. I'm kind of over the on again off again love triangle. But I'm also team Ryan, so I just want it to happen. His absence in this book was crushing I missed him, and my heart hurts for him. I want Tempe to step up for him the way he has stepped up for her. But, I guess I'll just have to keep reading to find out what's going to happen there.

50 Book Reading Challenge 2015: A book from an author you love that you haven't read yet

I knew from the second I saw this category that my book would be from Reichs. She is definitely my favorite author and this book did not disappoint. I try to make sure I always have one of her books that I haven't read yet so the option is there. This book is a tale of dog mummies, Afghanistan, and illegal smuggling. I was kept guessing until the last few pages trying to figure out who the bad "guy" was. As always, I highly recommend checking this out. :)
