Nice short story with fun rhythms and echo back words. In my box for my Rhythm and Music storytime.

This book's narrative is meant to be read as though you were listening to be bop, making it an interesting and almost multi-media read!  That being said, it also might be a little jarring if you're not expecting this to be such an abstract picturebook!  But Chris Raschka does it again and combines both his incredible illustrations with a stylistic tone of narration.  It's a celebration of the genre, and of Charlie Parker.  Great for grades K-2.

Saw this illustrator/author at the Decatur Book Festival, and his love of jazz enraptured me. I bought three of his books - this one, one about Monk, and one about Coltrane.

His illustrations are very jazz-inspired, and his syncopated approach to writing is fun and a great way to turn kids onto the rhythms and swing of classic jazz.

That my kids are 7 and 5 and now know who Bird and Trane are gives me hope. I appreciate this talented guy giving them an in-road to America's truest art form: jazz.

This book is just plain fun to read out loud and look at. (Of course, it helps if you have a sense of what Parker's music sounds like). Got it because it was on a list of 'perfect books to read for every age' -- I believe, in the NY Times, and one of the few children's books I was not familiar with -- also because my wife plays different forms of jazz for her preschool class. Enjoy!

I love this book. You absolutely have to find the rhythm and talk-sing it.

Great book for visuals and making fun sounds, playing with words that sounds like musical sounds the story works great for younger kids who like to imitate sounds
