I picked this book up thinking "Kadir Nelson! it is another Kadir Nelson. I MUST read this and look lovingly at each and every illustration." Upon reading it, that wasn't what I did. The story is cute and sweet, the landscapes are brilliant, the moon against the midnight sky is fantastic. I just can't get passed the eyes of the animals. Reading other reviews it may just be me but the eyes just don't contain the soul that I have come to expect from Nelson's books. (and they kind of creep me out a little.) I really wanted to like this book more. I hope his next one I like better.

I got excited when I saw a new title by Mr Nelson, but I feel let down. The paintings were beautiful but lacked a bit of the soul found in his depiction of people. Baby Bear gets lost and asks forest and mountain animals for advice on getting home. Some advice is more practical or useful than others but the message was certainly of the "follow your heart" variety. Not my fav.

Simply loved it. Will be getting this one for my future kids. The art was amazing and the story was simply adorable.

It is a simple story, that is true. It has some of the most beautiful illustrations I've ever seen. I'm completely in love with the picture he's done of Baby Bear looking up at the Moon. Just gorgeous.

I was going to use this book for preschool storytime, because the illustrations are so captivating. However, after reading the story, I decided not to use it. The way Baby Bear and the other animals speak to each other is a bit syrupy sweet, and seemed unnatural (i.e. calling each other "dear -insert animal name here-"). I was very disappointed at the end, when lost little Baby Bear found his way home, but there were no other bears there waiting for him to return.

I love Kadir Nelson and I liked this story alright but is anyone else a bit freaked out by Baby Bear's hollow eyes? There's no life in them. Which is strange because Nelson's human subjects are always so full of life and spirit.
