Story

After finishing the Folk of Air series by Holly Black I was itching for another fae story to sink my teeth into, and this one delivered. I absolutely enjoyed the secrets, mysteries and quests in this book.

I will say that the plot waffled a bit in the middle. It felt like there was no clear direction and the characters just went in circles for a while. It picked up again toward the end and I need answers badly so sequel here I come.

Writing & Worldbuilding
The writing is the thing that really stood out to me in this book. It flowed so easily and made me actually forget that I was reading for a while. The worldbuilding also stood out. It was a lot of fun seeing the fae interact with their environment. We don’t get large info dumps through dialogue, but rather through how Ella and the rest interact with the world.

It was great seeing the fae use their powers, and there was a particular squirrel scene I just found hilarious. Seriously, if you need a fae fix after finishing the Folk of Air series, this is it.

Characters
Flint was by far my favourite character. Even though Ella is our protagonist, I really enjoyed Flint. He’s mischievous and loyal and I just love everything that comes out of his mouth.

The side characters in this book were just as fleshed out as the protagonist, which made it that much more enjoyable. I found that I actually cared about what happened to them, which is rare for me.

All in all, this was a really fun book to read and I definitely recommend it.
