rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
format: audiobook (Libby)
I’ve spent the last few days picking cherries with Lara, Joe, Maisie, Emily, and Nell. 🍒 Meryl Streep’s performance as Lara in Tom Lake truly transported me to the Nelson’s cherry farm, Tom Lake, and everywhere in between.
We join the narrator, Lara, during the pandemic on her families cherry farm, as she tells her three adult daughters the story of her summer romance with movie star and actor Duke during the summer stock theater season in Tom Lake.
I loved Lara - her actions, good and bad, felt so real throughout the book. While she’s sharing a story about a summer romance, we learn so much about her character, her relationship with her friends, and her early history with her husband, Joe.
Joe and Lara’s daughters, Emily, Maisie, and Nell were supporting characters, but even through their reactions to Duke’s story I learned so much about them and felt like I related to much to different parts of their personalities.
No major traumatic plot events, honestly no huge plot points at all, but wonderful storytelling and characters. A very enjoyable lit fic read!

I initially thought I wasn’t going to like this novel- I had a slow start getting into it- but I did like it very much. The writing is excellent and Ann Patchett does a masterful job of telling a story of a family on a cherry farm in Michigan during the pandemic and the story of one summerstock theater season. Writing out the plot like that makes it seem like it shouldn’t work- that it will be odd or clunky or forced but it is not at all. Put it on your list.

The pace of this book is slow and I jumped into the audiobook midway, enticed by Meryl Streep's narration – a choice I'm glad I made.

This was a book club choice. It was very boring. This novel is character driven but the characters were one-dimensional, unlikeable and uninteresting. In my opinion nothing interesting happens except
when Uncle Wallace throws up all that blood on stage but still finished the show!
There is also very little romance involved in this “romance” novel.

Solid book. Took me up until 50% through to get invested in the story. Really lovely and would recommend overall.
