I started reading this series because it was my husband's favorite book series when he was a kid so we have them all and he really wanted me to read them too. Given that the target demographic is young males, I didn't have too high of hopes but I have been pleasantly surprised. The stories are engaging and interesting, they aren't super predictable, and the characters aren't overly annoying and/or childish. I'm always super interested to learn about the new worlds and nefarious plots of Saint Dane in each installment.

In this book, there were definitely some twists and turns I didn't see coming. I enjoyed the overall story and found the plot around slavery and dehumanization interesting and deep, especially for a middle-grade novel. Things are definitely getting more complex and are looking pretty dire for Bobby and the Travelers at this point so I am excited to see what happens in the next one!

2021 reread

Personally this is a 4.5⭐ read like I'd wanna give it a 5 but there's something that's missing that makes it a little not perfect to me and it's something that's remained unchanged on this reread. I think making the story derivative (?) of Planet of the Apes kinda deflated me to enjoy it so completely. Also going back again with two different groups of people (or rather gars and klees) and one enslaving the other and all that felt regressive in terms of quality bc the conflict could have been different and more creative something new, you know? But I still enjoyed everything even when some things really didn't sell it for me. And Boon is honestly my favorite character here!! He reminds me so much of Alder ❤️ and I loved Courtney and Mark too. And Kasha's little revenge on Durgen was wild and I loved it! And what can I say about Saint Dane, he was exquisite here and truly showed how he's a master puppeteer villain. Saint Dane makes these books a delight to read and at points even root for him to win, why lie? 😆
