What I have enjoyed most about Stewart’s Merlin trilogy is that, whilst a retelling of the Arthurian legend, it is very much about Merlin.

There’s a warmth to this book that gives it charm. Rather focusing on the great events and battles, while still mentioned, this final book focuses on the reality of old age and decline, the loss of strength and power, of acceptance and the passing of the torch onwards to the next generation. Stewart does a great job of adding a new spin to the legend, emphasizing the lasting impact Merlin the Enchanter has made on history and on fiction.
