I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to adopt Kevin and his mad family and his kooky friend Freddy. Great characters and a really good mystery too, what more could I want!

I really enjoyed this story and the mystery kept me guessing. It was laugh-out-loud funny at times and the characters were great. But it wasn't perfect. My main issue was the body-shaming that kept up through most of the book. Every time it came up, it took me out of the story and took me a few to get back to enjoying it. If that hadn't been a semi-major plotline, this probably would have been a 5 star read.

What a delightful book this was! Well, you know, the death is very sad, but it brought up all kinds of interesting issues of how different people meet their needs, with or without realizing it. Of course the issues and the people are mostly about the lives of gay men, but they are all so diverse. The narration is humorous without being way over the top. And most of all, I liked the pacing of the story & development. The only thing I found unrealistic is the little amount of sex our hero rent-boy has with his clients. But I did like that the book was not ALL about sex. Go figure.
SpoilerOk, I like Freddy. He's the sounding board and provides the interesting thoughts our MC is overlooking, fills in the blanks. But he is definitely not a field operative. Lol I worry poor Kevvy won't have enough backup. So far Freddy has come through. Let's hope that keeps up.

Snarky MCs are difficult to write and this one was a miss for me. Kevin is a deeply unlikeable POV MC as he repeatedly crosses over the line from sassy into mean-spirited cattiness.

Is it the suicide it looks like or is it murder? When Kevin Connor's favourite non-trick dies, Kevin does not believe it is suicide. When his first love blast from the past is the investigating detective who supports the suicide theorey, Kevin goes it alone. Or rather takes his raggle taggle group of friends and customers on his investigative journey.

I enjoyed this. Kevin's mother moving in, railroading his life and getting him to do things he shouldn't by reliving her birthing moments are funny.
Freddy is the constant side kick who may harbour more feelings for Kevin but also doesn't pass on an opportunity! But they also whittle down the list of suspects to a potentially lethal denouement - but yet not identifying the murderer!
Kevin is a hustler so we meet his 'Madam' and his oddball clients. And the dangers of such work are highlighted.
Tony is a bit odd, does he want Kevin (yes), does he not want Kevin (yes) - he needs to make his mind up.
Enjoyed it, it flowed quickly, the real murderer was from left field right at the end.

Enjoyed this one.

Story - no gaping holes, a little disjointed at the start and probably could have done with a bit more at the front.. Having said that it filled in as we went into the story. I do love me a good mystery and I think best of all I can say that Scott has written a really good one I was second guessing all the way to the end and didn't really get close.

Characters - Great characters, funny if a little on the fluffy side but I have to say that I've been reading a bit to much lately where we delve into the characters more than the story and I've always said I like knowing the characters better. The main is good though and there is some good internal dialogue with him that makes you understand/picture him better. The secondary ones are well written to.

I'm looking forward to seeing more from this character and writer. Look forward to seeing where things go and how we get there. (It's part of a series.)

Cheers Scott for the great read.

I was just tagging the book and realized I had to select a "minimal/no sex" tag for a book about a rent boy. Ha-ha.

I read through the reviews and found a few negative points, quite valid ones, too, that should bring the stars down. Yes, there were some not very appropriate jokes at other characters' expense, but be real. How often do we do it in real life without even realizing it at times? It's unfortunate, but true.
The mystery aspect might be far-fetched but the story grabs your attention, sucks you right in and won't let you go until the end. There should be something said for that.
The final chapters were a bit over the top - criminal after criminal confessing to their crimes. But - oh, well, - there was a point to it. You thought you figured it out, but ...you didn't! :P

5 stars. Filing it under "favorites".
