At first the switching POVs, unfamiliar terminology and (initially) slower pacing of this book made it hard for me to get into it. I almost gave up on it a few times, but the vivid and beautiful writing style kept me engaged enough to keep going - and I'm glad I did.
I became incredibly attached to all the POV characters (but not really many of the side characters tbh) , and am excited to see their growth in the next book, as well as (hopefully) seeing their stories overlap.
Though the pacing remained a bit too slow for my liking, it really picked up in the final quarter or so and I was completely hooked from that point until the end - and even would've careened straight into the next book had it not been very, VERY late lol.
Now that I'm more familiar with the style and world of this trilogy, I hope the next two books will be a bit easier to dive into :)

An absolutely epic fantasy!
Im not much of a high fantasy girlie, I was put off by series like Game of Thrones and thought this genre maybe wasn't for me. But this book may have changed my mind. It was refreshing reading a fantasy with nearly no misogyny at all, the battle scenes were really clear and crisp, the creatures in this world were so creepy and fascinating and the plot was really plotting. My favourite thing about it though was the characters, they were fantastic, I really fell in love with them. Their motivations were always really clear and even though they were flawed I couldn't help but root for them the whole way through (even when they were making the most ridiculous decisions). Loved This. Can't wait to read the next

Was a temporary DNF because it wasn't catching me and I had other stuff I needed/wanted to get to, but I liked this enough to pick it back up once a hold on an audiobook I forgot I placed came in. Very slow for like the first half-ish and then got really going and good. So. Medium pace is the best I can give it since it's slow and then pretty fast

Fantasy meets Viking lore in one of the most unique and fascinating books I’ve read in quite some time. Perhaps Gwynne’s greatest accomplishment is writing a novel in which action and death are omnipresent while still having strong character and plot developments. Where most authors rely on violence as a distraction or filler, Gwynne manages to use the action to bring the world to life and propel the characters and plot forward. The last 10% of the book is extraordinarily fast paced with revelation after revelation, each of which feels earned, and which set up what I expect to be a stellar sequel.
