I found this randomly on Amazon and it did not disappoint. Beautifully written. It is simple in it’s storytelling but so peaceful in his conviction. I loved this!!

Overall, this was a good read but just a little too slow for me. I found myself only being able to read a little at a time before picking something else up.

3.5 stars a lot of internal dialogue about how we become who we are. But the main storyline was intriguing, completely trading identities with someone else. To be able to find some fulfillment or happiness by changing the past.

An introspective and slightly melancholy novel, but well written. The exploration of identity and self is interesting. Sometimes I wished it would get to the point and spend less time wandering around, but I guess that says more about me and my tendency towards ADD than about the novel itself.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is the first by award-winning Japanese author Keiichiro Hirano to be translated into English.

The protagonist is Kido, an attorney who is helping a former client look into her husband’s past. The story meanders across Japan and through various characters who each have something to contribute to the plot.

I enjoyed the atmospheric elements that grounded the book in Japanese culture and was engaged right to the end in learning each character’s story. I hope to read more of Hirano’s books, maybe even in Japanese.

This book was mysterious in a way that was so poetic. It made me really challenge my own opinions and viewpoints on certain topics without necessarily feeling preachy. While it deals with heavy topics, the mystery that serves as the main catalyst of the plot never loses steam and it keeps you gripped right to the final pages.

Sometimes with translated works I feel like I miss some of the poetry and beauty that the story would have in it’s original language (not that I would ever mark a translated work because of that, seeing as I really need to learn more languages if it’s going to niggle at me this much lol) but from how thoroughly I enjoyed it I can only assume this translation did this Keiichiro Hirano’s writing justice.

Tragic and beautiful. I really enjoyed this one.

3.5. Pretty good book. Writing a bit on the nose at times, but not sure if that's native or part of the translation. My second time through IQ84 I wondered why the writing seemed slightly more engaging in the second half and then I found out it had two translators for each half, so now I constantly wonder about how much prose is a foreign author's and how much is from the translator.

Excellent modern little book about identity and relationships, written with a touch noir styling. A Man was a pleasure to read approaching its subject thoroughly, and despite being slightly uneven kept me thoroughly rapt.
