if you like poetry — especially the Black, queer, kinky, indignant, funny, Southern kind — then you must read this book. It’s an easy read that contains all the things I love to see in poems: wit, rhyme, alliteration, and audacity to tell the truth. we’re all lucky to be alive at the same time that jubi arriola-headley is publishing!

For poetry lovers and those who are just exploring the genre, "original kink" is an excellent read. It depicts the life of a queer Black man in America through all sorts of poetic forms, including those that in some moments feel more like flash fiction, and are in some cases interactive. The book also includes photos, which I love. Many of the poems are in conversation with other poets, or in some cases with people the author has known throughout his life. It is through the specific that we understand the universal, and whether or not you can relate to the author's experiences, the poignant detail used in each poem will draw you into its moment and make you feel.
