I wanted to like this book more than I did. Overall, I like that there is a discussion of so many types of sports involving boards: surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding. However, it makes the book feel longer than it is, which will work wonderfully with readers who are very interested in the sports but not for a large group of kids.

For: lovers of dinos and board related sports.

Possible red flags: Some readers may think the sports are promoting dangerous behavior or that the book is too long.

There isn't much in the way of real plot for this Dino Sports series, but the rhymes are fun.

It's a nice way to introduce different types of dinosaurs to kids who are interested in learning their names. But aside from just listing names, showing basic size differences, and categorizing the dinosaurs as meat-eaters and plant-eaters... it's very surface level.

I can't even say these books are that great at explaining the sports these dinosaurs are participating in. It's pretty clear that this series is for kids who already know the terminology well enough to understand what's happening in the story. Older kids will probably have an easier time of parsing it out, but younger kids are definitely more invested in looking at the pictures and learning whether the meat-eaters or the plant-eaters are going to win this time!

I will say that the concept of this dinosaur fantasy world is fascinating. Dodo has abandoned the world of competition for a well-earned vacation and Diplodocus probably drowned that poor tiny dino so carelessly buried on that beach, facing zero consequences as usual. This certainly isn't Diplo's only offense, but I do have to wonder if Dodo would have made sure proper precautions were taken by the onlookers during that stretch of the competition if he'd been there.

Follows various dinosaurs as they compete in surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding. Lots of technical lingo related to each sport, which will either spark kids' interest or fly over their heads. Each dinosaur is given a nickname based on its scientific name, like "Compy." When I said, "What's 'Compy' short for?" Husband not only knew right off the bat (it's short for Compsognathus), he acted like I was weird for not knowing. So at least I learned about Compsognathus, but other than that, I feel like the Dino-sport books are getting kind of old. Even so, I think kids will still like this book -- this may be yet another situation where I need to remind myself that I don't need to be mentally stimulated by every picture book that crosses my path. It's not about me; it's what the kids will enjoy.

Dinosaur titles are always popular with the kids and this series featuring dinosaurs exploring various sports will be popular regardless. This title combines too many sports into one book, features quite a bit of sports jargon that might confuse the adult reader and there's no glossary to explain.

A similar series, much better in concept is found in the dino-travel series by Deb Lund ("All Aboard the Dinotrain" "Dinosailors", etc)

I just like this series. I think they are well written and well rhymed, and have great illustrations.
