one of the onl short stories novela's where i didn't believe any of them suffered more than the other. i am not familiar with sri lanka's history and will definitely be looking into the history of the sri lankan civil war (?) and how colonialism shaped this country's history. a common thread throughout was how political upheaval did not directly affect any of the characters but shaped their lives in subtle ways. i also think the author did a great job of examining how ignorance and dissociation from current events often occurs even during horrible atrocities. some of these people did engage with these events on an intellectual level, but never engaged with the "in person" aspects of everything which misguided them into viewing things such as resistance, rebellion, communism, revolution into something trivial which i thought the author id beautifully.
