Delightfully absurd. The animal sounds really add a certain something to the experience of this audio adaptation. The characters are all so strange and colorful. And with her plucky personality, Flora manages to transform the farm and help all the Starkadders to reinvent their dreary lives.

Far funnier that I expected it to be! I hadn’t heard of this book before picking it up on a shelf from the library, but I’m so glad that I did, the absolute melodrama of the people in the farm compared to flora’s ‘well let’s get it done!’ attitude is so stark and makes said melodrama stand out even more. Will probably be watching the movie later on

Rather funny satirical novel turning the tables on a gothic countryside epic. A truly messed up bunch of people. Fortunately Flora Poste comes along with her trusty guidebook, "The Higher Common Sense," and begins work to set everyone to rights.

3.5 stars. This book was HILARIOUS. I laughed out loud multiple times.
I loved Flora Poste, an unconventional fairy godmother, so to speak. Her ability to see the potential in everyone, and her grace and kindness was awesome.
All the characters were unique and they interacted together so well.
This was definitely a satire, poking fun at the gothic novels of the time.
The reason for the lower star rating is because I wasn’t a fan of all the content. There wasn’t anything graphic, but two characters were “rogues”. There was too much going on about it for my preferences.

DNF. I got about 20% of the way in and could just not get into the book. Which is a shame cause this was one that I had been looking forward to reading for awhile.

It took me a few chapters to realize that the author's praising of her own flowery sentences using asterisks was tongue-in-cheek. After that, it was smooth sailing. I loved the subtle futuristic elements thrown into the English countryside, and Flora's wit at the beginning of the novel left me hungrily searching for more. The story was a bit too light-hearted for me towards the end, and I would have liked to see more of Charles, but all-in-all, it was delightful.
