'Mae Vol. 1' with story and art by Gene Ha is a graphic novel about a missing sister and what happens when she shows up again.

Mae's older sisten has been missing for a long time. One day, Mae's sister Abbie shows up with a story about hunting monsters that seem outlandish. Then the monsters show up and Mae and Abbie are on the run and Abbie's stories don't seem so crazy as they end up in the weird world that Abbie was in.

It's a pretty goofy romp with a cast of oddball characters. Abbie is a fun character, but I'm not sure why the book is called Mae. The art is also fun with all the various creatures.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

another graphic novel series that I wish there were more at the library. it kind of reminds of Alice in wonderland and suckerpunch.

It’s fine, too many nerdy references imo like I understood all of them but it was a lot in one volume of a graphic novel. Referencing doctor who, world of Warcraft and evil dead in just a few pages is a lot

Wow, this was actually an awful reading experience for me. I don't really want to be brutal, but the characterization is nonsensical and weak (are they going for deadpan when Mae seems utterly nonplussed when her sister reappears after twenty or so years?), the plot makes weird jumps that keeps me uninterested in the story (it seems like the creative team behind this is just coasting between plot points, letting page breaks serve as inconsistent temporal jumps), the art is flat and uninteresting, and the deconstruction of tropes seemed pretty rote. That's a no from me.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a really cute idea, but it was really slow to start for me. I wanted to get some of the action going! I did very much enjoy the dynamics of the story between the two sisters, however, the rest of the writing left me a bit flat. The art is good, stylistically cartoonish which accommodates a younger audience. Overall a decent read and I would recommend it to younger readers. Older teens and adults may find it lacking.

I received a free electronic ARC of this graphic novel from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

I love the world-building in this book. The details are precise. The artwork outstanding. I felt a connection to the characters. I saw some really original concepts in here. I want to know more!

Unfortunately this just didn't do it for me.
The primary art style was not good at all. It was that 3D animated style you might see on a $5 click and point game and was not good to look at. It did change in the last part with a much better style but not sure if the change was intended or they changed the artist in the midst of the series.
Story wise, it just didn't grab me enough to really care at all

Well, bummer.

I kind of liked the art for Mae, and the storyline was ok, but BOY WAS I DISTRACTED BY THE FONT. It just didn't work for me at all. I realized that a lot of stuff was BOLD for EMPHASIS but I couldn't handle reading it. It was too much and totally distracted me from the story. I won't be reading any more volumes in this story, unfortunately. The art and characters weren't enough to keep me reading.

DNF.  This is the third book I've read that has older protagonists revisiting a portal world and I think I've DNF'd all of them.  Note to self: stop trying them out.
