"Justiz" handelt von... wovon handelt dieses Buch eigentlich? Diese Frage lässt sich wohl kaum richtig beantworten, schon aufgrund der verwirrenden Schilderungen Späts, des Erzählers, der meist in betrunkenem Zustand schreibt. Aber vielleicht ist die Beantwortung dieser Frage auch gar nicht wichtig zum Verständnis des Romans.

Ob er nun getötet habe oder nur töten wollte, moralisch zählt die Absicht, nicht die Ausführung.

Dürrenmatt geht es also gar nicht um die Handlung selbst, viel mehr um die Motivationen und um die Hinterfragung dieser. In "Justiz" schafft er ziemlich unrealistische Rahmenbedingungen für einen noch unrealistischeren Mord, begangen und mit angeschaut von Charakteren, die wohl kaum noch stereotypischer sein könnten.
Spät, ein ständig besoffener Rechtsanwalt mit ausgeprägtem Gerechtigkeitssinn, will für Gerechtigkeit sorgen und stößt dabei an die Grenzen der Justiz, verzweifelt und scheitert. Durch seinen verklärten Blick werden dem Lesenden der Mord und die Beteiligten präsentiert. Jeder wird genaustens analysiert, jedem werden gesellschaftliche Rollen zugeschrieben und letztlich kann niemand den damit einhergehenden Erwartungen (wie beispielsweise moralisches Handeln) gerecht werden. Doch auch dies stellt kein sonderliches Problem dar, denn Spät zerstört nicht nur seine Karriere als Rechtsanwalt, sondern auch kurz darauf die Illusion von einer allgemeingültigen Moral - moralisch Handeln - sowas gäbe es doch gar nicht.
Ein Richter braucht persönlich ebensowenig gerecht zu sein wie der Papst gläubig.
Damit befreit sich Spät von jeglicher Verantwortung und geht zugrunde - leichte Gesellschaftskritik seitens Dürrenmatt, würde ich mal behaupten.

Möglicherweise wird durch diese Rezension bereits klar, dass "Justiz" kein einfacher Roman ist, die Sätze scheinen kein Ende zu nehmen, nichts wird auf den Punkt gebracht. Doch womöglich ging es Dürrenmatt einfach nur um die Schilderung der Komplexität vom Menschsein und diese Erkenntnis muss als "Botschaft" reichen.

Dürrenmatts Schreibstil ist wie immer ein Segen- sarkastisch und geistreich, aber durch den Stil des Romans ist Justiz doch ein eher harter Lesebrocken. Anwalt Spät springt durch die Zeit (kein Wunder in seinem meist besoffenen Zustand) und wirft mit Namen herum, dass ohne Konzentration schnell der Faden verloren ist. Der Justizfall ist natürlich abstrus und dennoch genial, weil genauer überlegt, wenn auch tragisch, dies wohl wirklich passieren könnte?!

This is my first time reading anything by Dürrenmatt, a Swiss playwright and writer. I would say this book is the anti-crime novel. Although steeped in the ambience of noir, it's a philosophical and existential, thus absurdist, exploration of justice and human morality. I found it both fascinating and confounding and couldn't quite put it down. It's narrated by a down on his luck alcoholic lawyer tasked with "proving" the innocence of a guilty man. As such, the narrative swerves and turns and provides none of the chronological coherence and tidiness of plot that you would find in a more traditional whodunit. The author apparently started this in the 1950s and finished it in the 80s. There is a lot of criticism of Swiss society and its contradictions packed into the thirty years it took to complete this book. But much of it is a recognition of a universal malaise, distilled into sharp satire.

Giganticul avion tocmai începuse să urce spre cerul nopţii, urlând, vuind, avându-l pe doctor honoris causa Isaak Kohler la bord şi îndreptându-se spre Australia, când am sărit din Volkswagenul meu, cu revolverul cu piedica ridicată. Faptul că mă mai sunase la telefon a fost una dintre loviturile sale de maestru, pentru că bătrânul ştia probabil ce aveam de gând; şi toată lumea ştia că nu am bani să-l urmăresc.
Aşa că nu mi-a rămas altceva de făcut decât să aştept până se întoarce, cândva în iunie sau poate în iulie, să mă îmbăt când şi când, sau poate mai des, după cum voi sta cu banii, şi să scriu, singura activitate pe măsură pentru un avocat definitiv ruinat. Într-o singură privinţă însă se înşală consilierul cantonai: timpul nu va vindeca crima sa, aşteptarea mea nu o va atenua, beţiile mele nu o vor face uitată, scrierile mele nu o vor justifica.
Prin faptul că înfăţişez adevărul, mă impregnez de el, îmi creez starea necesară pentru ca, prin iunie sau, cum am mai spus, în iulie sau oricând s-ar întoarce (şi se va întoarce), să fac în mod conştient, fie beat, fie treaz, ceea ce acum doream să fac doar dintr-un impuls orb. Această relatare nu este doar o justificare, ci şi pregătirea pentru asasinat. Pentru un asasinat adevărat.
Din nou treaz, în cabinetul meu de lucru: dreptatea poate fi reinstaurată doar printr-o crimă. Că după aceea mă voi sinucide este un lucru de la sine înţeles. Prin aceasta nu vreau să mă sustrag răspunderii, ci, dimpotrivă, numai astfel aş răspunde pentru faptele mele, chiar dacă nu din punct de vedere juridic, ci din punct de vedere uman: deşi sunt în posesia adevărului, nu-l pot dovedi, îmi lipsesc martorii pentru momentul hotărâtor. Prin moartea mea de bunăvoie va fi mai uşor să fiu crezut fără martori.
Nu merg la moarte ca un om de ştiinţă care printr-un experiment asupra lui însuşi se condamnă pentru cauza ştiinţei, eu mor deoarece am gândit cazul meu până la ultima lui consecinţă logică.
