I bought this because it’s set during the same time and in the same place as the new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and i think it will be interesting to see how the two did different things.
i have things to say about each story so here goes:
  • Flesh Of My Flesh. The strongest story. i think the Ngultor was really cool they were like a bio borg. lends itself to the idea that the borg have cropped up several times throughout history.
  • The Fires Of Pharos. forgettable. the most memorable thing is when yeoman dickhead delivers a pickup line to nurse carlotti. she’s cool. she’s gay and will be dating mullet lady. i will not be taking suggestions.
  • Our Dearest Blood. fine i guess. the aliens were downright boring. they’re just humans with pointy teeth. it’s a comic they can do anything they want but they choose this. they’re called rigellians and there’s already two species called rigellians, both of which are more interesting than these guys.
yeoman dickhead dies. god bless america
  • Nor Iron Bars A Cage. Really interesting take on the pilot and fleshed out yeoman Youth-&-Strength very nicely
  • The Legacy of Lazarus. good art, poor story. ft. Hitler

overall, could have been better. yeoman dickhead is a dickhead. Nano is cool

The beginning of a series dealing with Christopher Pike and the pre-Kirk crew with some nice tie-ins to the original series. The stories themselves aren’t earth shattering, but better than average comic book fare. The classic Gold Key #9 with Len Wein taking over the writing chores (for this and the next seven issues) is also an improvement; I’m looking forward to the upcoming issues.
