The Cartel is a family story that achieves the paradoxical feat of being idealistic, sentimental and romantic, with a happy ending, while also containing rape, murder, pedophilia, and drug wars. My guess would be that the idea for this book was conceived while someone was watching The Godfather on an LSD trip.

Drama is entertaining for sure, but not as the main focus of the story. As least not for me. It's not my cup of tea, but I can see how it may be for some others. Mafia wars, the backdrop of Mexico and illegal immigration to the US, complicated family and relationship dynamics, and jealous murder conspiracies may be satisfying enough for those who don't mind the incongruous romanticism and harshness.

This was a heavy book, but a great story. There are some tough moments, as most would expect from a book about a drug cartel, but the story-telling is excellent and everything is wrapped up at the end (no questioning about what happened to any particular characters or sub-plots, which I always hate).
