Mostly enjoyed this book though the abrupt ending took me by surpise and I'm not really sure what to make of it.
The writing is good and the story is engaging. Its subject matter is at times brutal but Edugyan always tempers it with compassion. I'm glad I read it but feel a little let down by the ending.

I loved this booked, very subtle. I know some think there is a slow part in the middle of the book but I thought it was consistently interesting and fast paced through out. Not sure about the last paragraph though...not sure what was happening!

The last 1/3 of book seemed to wander somewhat meaninglessly.  Yet on the whole a fascinating story.

A sort of unlikely pick for me. Thrilling, plot-driven historical fiction following the life of a once slave through North America, Europe, and Africa. I found the most compelling things about this book to be the descriptions of the widely varying landscapes and the thematic exploration of family. Which upon further reflection, might have to do with the listening to it instead of reading it. Listened to the audiobook and found the narrator to be excellent except when doing a Scottish accent, that said would absolutely recommend the audiobook. A great one to recommend for literary readers who are looking to read some fantasy or historical fiction that still feels ground in realism.
