Only two more books to go, and I am not entirely sure if I want to continue. On the one hand yes, I want to know more about what happened in the past, I want to know more about Solomon, I want to know about Cammie, I want to know if Zach and Cammie get to dating, but on the other hand, the book does drag on and it seems that every possible twist that can be thrown at us, is thrown at us. And it just gets slightly (well ok, a lot) ridiculous. If you think this and that was silly, then be prepared, this book is just even more silly.

The books also follow a predictable story line, which makes it even more boring. At the beginning: Something happens. Middle part: Some boring stuff and trying to figure out things. End part: Lots of stuff going on, operations starting and even more stuff is being thrown at you.

But we can see Cammie grow up. From a girl who at times didn't have a clue and froze like a deer in headlights when encountering boys, she is starting to shape up more and more as a spy. As a true Gallagher Girl. Sure, she still makes some stupid remarks, and she makes some mistakes, but that is fine, that makes her character a bit more rounded.

I love her friends, it was great fun to see them and I know I would love a book from one of their POVs. They are all so interesting, and while they play a big role, I would love to see them in a main character role. Telling us their side of the story, telling us their history, showing us more about them.

Ah Zach, I still like him, though I wish we would know what is the deal with him. We find out some stuff, but a lot of him is still shrouded in mystery, and it just gets so frustrating.
I love him and Cammie together, they are so cute.

The ending was great again, though it is just silly that almost all the action happens at that part. And that when you think you know most of what is happening in the story, you still get twists and turns thrown at you.

All in all, I might continue, I might also just drop this series. For now I got enough other books to read, so the decision will be made at a later time.

Ahhh I really am enjoying this series more now that it's getting a bit darker and mysterious. I can't believe how quickly I'm getting through these books; Ally Carter, you did something really right here.

I don't know, I feel like these are a bit disjointed. If you're going to write six books, I just believe they should be really tightly plotted, or really episodic in nature. But what happened is the first two books were REALLY episodic and not that related to the overall arc, and then the third book sort of started things but took you on a tangent, and then this one acted like it was four books in to a really strong plot that hadn't really been there.

The book itself is an enjoyable read, if maybe a little predictable. I still like these.

(Although, as much as I personally love Zach, I don't want to see them together. I don't want to see Cammie trust him EVER with how he acts. Just no.)

Trigger warnings: violence, death, grief, injuries, kidnapping, espionage, lying, manipulation

March 2024: This is when I start to lose nostalgia, and start re-reading almost with a clear head. I don't think I read this when I was younger, but even 10 years ago when I re-read the whole series for the first time, I don't remember all the details of the book. However, I do know that this is when things get serious. And they did. The big bad that was introduced in the last book is taking center stage throughout the latter half of this series and the details get much more intense and sinister as it goes on. So much gets revealed in this book that it is quite overwhelming for a first time reader I feel. Though I do think that the uptick in the action is Carter's bread and butter; this author is very good at building tension and also establishing entertaining and heart-racing action scenes. It adds a new level to this series that I think makes it one that I love to keep coming back to. Cammie and the girls are in a whole heap of trouble and are trying to navigate all these news things to the best of their abilities. The addition of uncertainty and revelations that bring their reality into question makes this one of the best in the series; nothing can take the spot of the first book as my favorite, but this is a close second.
