Honestly, I think this one is more for the parents than the kids. It's a cute story though. One that might be good for kids who are afraid of the monster in the closet. It had a funny and clever ending as well.

This was cute, I guess...

I was really disappointed that this was a generic children's story with (admittedly really excellent) illustrations of Buffy characters thrown over the top. Makes it feel like a bit of  money grab for 90s kids who now want to read nice safe children's stories to their kids, but with a nostalgic vibe for themselves. The last page made me chuckle, so that's something.

While I thought the book was charming and an adorable way to introduce the characters, I think the only group it is going to appeal to are the fans. I tried to imagine giving this book to my neighbor's son for Halloween and decided I'm going to have to clear it with his parents first. Not that there is anything wrong with the book exactly, but it doesn't have the universal appeal many books for kids around Halloween have.

The only other thing I question is the monsters. I would think it would be difficult for a kid to understand she's going to fight monsters and oh by the way there's a slew of monsters in her closet, but they're nice. Monsters, like people, can be good or bad? If that is the message, that is lost.

This is so cute!! And so not canonically accurate... Ha. Any BtVS fan knows eight-year-old Buffy didn't know she was a slayer, wasn't best friends with Willow and Xander, didn't know Giles, and had never even been to Sunnydale. The collection of monsters they meet is also more diverse than what we see in the show, movies, or even comics. But this book is still adorable, with a decent stand-alone story that can also be an age-appropriate entry into a series no child should be watching.

Cute book, but definitely more for nostalgic fans than children unfamiliar with the show.
