"'Oh, I will give my heart to God,' I said, 'YOU do not want it.'"
I'm a big fan of the genre in which we see the protagonist grow up, not forged in the fires of single events, but truly worn in by life they've lived (in reading more about this book I've learned the genre is called bildungsroman). The critiques on gender dynamics, classism, and religion are all pointed and direct, and don't detract in the slightest from an exciting and pulpy narrative with numerous twists. The book starts slow, but most of the initial time with Mrs Reed pays off later on. Certainly the bulk of the story is spent on Jane's relationship with Mr. Rochester, but even the time spent with the Rivers keeps interest and weaves well into the life of Jane Eyre.
It's also fascinating that this was released the same year as Wuthering Heights, which is equally as revered by high school literature programs. Comparing the two provides a number of similarities, but here are a couple of key differences I notice after reading the two near each other. Jane Eyre is largely a more optimistic story, with most of the "villains" meeting some form of justice, or forgiveness from our titular heroine, whereas Wuthering Heights seems to bask in the harsh truth that sometimes bad things happen to good people, good things happen to bad people, and the universe may never balance the scales. It's the more artistically bold stance to take, but as an enjoyable read for an eternal optimisist, Jane Eyre will edge out Wuthering Heights. Another difference is specifically in the characterization of the "tall, dark, and handsome" male lead. Both are brooding, and have misfortune befall them, but Rochester is painted with sympathy in places, and when he is knocked down it seems more pitiable than Heathcliff's woes.
Life has gotten in the way of me being able to quickly blaze through this, but that is no reflection on how much I enjoyed the story or admired the quality of its writing. A classic that would be just as popular if released today in modern vernacular.

Scritto meravigliosamente, con una ricchezza psicologica scintillante, Jane Eyre è uno di quei classici che inizi e divori (emozionandoti) in un lampo.

Amo la letteratura inglese! Soprattutto quella vittoriana, e la amo per tante ragioni: adoro la semplicità con la quale vengono raccontate le più diverse storie, senza quella pomposità e quella ricercatezza, delle volte fin troppo ridondante, attraverso la quale sembra chissà cosa debba dimostrare lo scrittore o la scrittrice in questione; adoro le tormentate storie d'amore che spesso la caratterizzano, che siano a lieto fine o meno, perché mi permettono di nutrire la mia fantasia ed i miei sogni, quasi come se ogni volta volessi gridare "Oh anche tu scrittore/scrittrice hai immaginato questa cosa? Anche tu quando sogni, sogni ciò che sogno io?"; e adoro le atmosfere e le ambientazioni di quell'Inghilterra che tanto amo e che porto sempre stampata nel mio cuore.
Le sorelle Bronte sono una garanzia per me, sono tra quelle scrittrici (beh ammetto che per quanto riguarda la letteratura sono abbastanza femminista!) con cui mi sento più in contatto, con cui sento di avere più cose in comune; non a caso "Cime tempestose" è uno dei miei libri preferiti. Charlotte l'ho sempre immaginata come la più riflessiva e la più misurata delle sorelle..ma anche quella più passionale nei sentimenti, e "Jane Eyre" a mio avviso lo dimostra.
Questo libro è bellissimo perché mette in scena un amore che tutti sogniamo, un amore disinteressato che non si cura ne delle apparenze ne degli aspetti materiali. La figura di Mr. Rochester non si può non amare.. sono fermamente convinta quando dico che è sicuramente il mio personaggio preferito all'interno del libro, un personaggio che in alcuni dei suoi plurimi aspetti mi ha portato alla mente diversi ricordi.. dolorosi per quanto belli. E in fin dei conti, tutti cerchiamo collegamenti con la nostra persona o la nostra storia quando leggiamo un libro. Ecco, proprio quando ci si riesce vuol dire che quel libro sarà importante per noi, come per me è stato importante "Jane Eyre".. anche se solo per un dolce sorriso di un attimo, anche se solo per un piccola lacrima trattenuta tra un ricordo e un altro.

Aunque hay que entender el contexto histórico la misoginia en este libro es impresionante, a grandes rasgos me parece un gran libro, mi parte favorita es la de su infancia.
