The Cricket on the Hearth is one of those books that I have started multiple times, with the intention of finally finishing it. So, yesterday, I finally did. Although this isn't a Christmas story, more like a January story, I did enjoy it.

3 stars for the story, but I'm afraid that I was far too distracted by Jim Dale's voices again to really enjoy it. I kept hearing characters from Harry Potter in his various voices, especially Hagrid.

3.5. The start had so much description I kept getting lost and it too me a while to get the characters down. Once I did work through that and the story became more speech driven I enjoyed it more

It started out super fun and then went in a completely unexpected direction. But this shouldn't surprise me coming from Dickens, right? :) I did enjoy the story overall, though, I just wasn't prepared for some harsh realities that hit. Yet there is hope threaded throughout the story, so that helped tremendously. Still, the first several paragraphs are perfectly described and woven that I was invested within the story before I knew it. I loved those bits particularly!

Dickens’s third Christmas story (although it doesn’t really involve Christmas? It’s centered around a wedding that I think was in January) but his first to not involve ghosts that show the main character visions of their impact on people. A fun story with great characters and a charming reveal at the end.

Dickens’s writing is good, as always, but the plot is overly maudlin, the characters not quite a crisply drawn, and the story itself feels bland.
