4.5 stars. A generational novel presented in episodes and glimpses, as though observed from a bit of a distance. Beautifully written. My main quibble is with the ending, which seemed pat and contrived. Still—life serves up surprises, even improbable ones.

I LOVED this book- it is the perfect example of a story where the most powerful parts are what is unsaid. Lively did a great job showcasing three generations of women and they hardships faced throughout their lives and relationships. I can't wait to reread this...

I really liked the first part of this book, but I honestly was much more invested in the first generation of characters than I was with the characters in the 2nd and 3rd part of this book. But overall it was an interesting multi-generational story and not a bad read.

I love a generational story but this one just didn’t hit for me. The writing was not powerful enough. I wish she sink in deeper into events instead it felt like she showed us a snapshot image and quickly moved onto the next. Some very important events were skimmed making me lose interest in the characters.
Lorna’s section was probably the best. Molly’s didn’t feel flushed out and wasn’t given the depth she deserves. By the time they got to Ruth, I felt I had to really power through. Sometimes the protagonist felt undefined and almost like the same person in a different circumstance.
Blah.

Not the kind of book I really enjoy. I prefer a plot, rather than a series of events. But well written and readable
