Really enjoyed it. Would continue the series if my library had them!

I think my enjoyment of this book was marred somewhat because I listened to the audiobook version instead of reading the book. I have heard some incredible audio book narrations that enhanced the book and this was not one of them. The narrator was terrible. She would alternately read Kate as a whiny high-pitched girl and a gravelly deep voice, which made it difficult to get a feel for the character. In fact, the narrator’s inability to do a voice consistently made it difficult to connect with any of the characters, not just Kate. It makes it difficult to rate the book as well because there is always the chance that the book’s own voice would have done the same thing—at the end of the read, I still didn’t really care about any of the characters; except maybe Jules. I gave it two stars because I like the idea of Kate, her story and life seems interesting, and she’s a slightly different type of detective than what I have read before. The mystery was pretty creepy as well, and Vaughn (spelling?) was well-written as a broken artist, although again, I felt no real connection to her. I love the writing in the Mary Russell series so I’m baffled as to why this book left me feeling dissatisfied—I somehow assumed that the writer’s voice would translate even to a different universe.

I loved the straightbaiting through half of this book ngl. It was an interesting story and I did enjoy the main characters a lot. A few things by the end I didn't enjoy as much but overall i really enjoyed it.

I found myself chewing my nails throughout this book. Atmospheric and gorgeous. Kate is a dream come true (more lesbians in the mystery genre, PLEASE) and Al is charming and entertaining. Jules is my favorite ten year old ever. More, please.

A skillfully woven murder mystery, but more importantly, full of vibrant descriptions of people, both their public personas and their more private selfs. The descriptions of people and their thought processes was refreshingly insightful. I chuckled out loud a couple times at the way people were cleverly described. I appreciated how complex and real the characters were, at times surprisingly so. It took 207 pages to reveal something that I was watching for.

Third reading. It had moments of more detail than I'd prefer, but it was a clever mystery, well done, with a lot of fleshing out of the main character (this is the first in a short series).

Good, solid police detective story...the first of a series by a favorite author.

My first Kate Martinelli book, but definitely won't be my last. She's a bit prickly, but I liked her. And I really liked Al. Curious to see where this partnership goes.

Kate is assigned to a case with a new partner because she has the right requirements, which seems to be lady parts. We have young girls who are being murdered and dumped, which sounds awful but is oddly brushed over. We have a mysterious past, a weird cult-like community that lets me down by the end, and much less darkness than I expected. However, I still liked the story, the characters, and the potential for more.

A good start to a new series for me. Three stars.
