Marc, a literature professor in rural France, has been having a series if secret affairs with his students until he awakes one morning to find his latest conquest dead in bed next to him with no memory of what happened. He disposes of her body and tries to get back to his life of teaching, college politics, womanizing, and an oddly close relationship with his sister. Except the consequences of his actions take an unexpected turn when the dead student's stepmother seeks him out and he finds himself experiencing a new feeling for the first time.

Marc is a thoroughly unlikable and unsympathetic character, but the suspense and writing held my attention to the very end. Djian does a nice job of slowly revealing Marc's complicated history and building tension as Marc's choices begin to narrow his options and he faces increased scrutiny from his sister, his department head, and the police.

The main character meanders aimlessly; so does this novel. The main character is a selfish bore. Don't care about him. Don't care about the book.
