Firstly I got this book free from the author for an unbiased review. Secondly I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It's not like the usual vampire books out there at the minute. The vampires are in two groups, the purebloods are those who are born vampire and the made vampires. Our heroine Lisbeth is a born vampire and has always played by the rules until one day she has to make a choice between her own morality and the vampire law. On the run she meets Knight, a lycan who is shunned by his own people. Together they try to evade the hunters on Lisbeth's trail. The thing I liked most about this book is that the two main characters are strongly written, it's not just a 'fall into bed and live happily ever after' book. Definitely one of the better books in this genre and I'll be reading on to find out what happens to Lisbeth and Knight.

Rating and Review

Rating: 3 Stars

Given that I just finished the third book in the series, it’s safe for me to say that I don’t think it’s bad.

I originally chose to read the YA version of this story instead of the NSFW version—for some reason my brain [incorrectly] assumed that for a book to be labeled “NSFW” it had to be more risqué than both erotic and dark romances.

Anyway, I made it to 33% of the YA version, but threw in the towel when the sentence, “You’re a bit of a butt, you know that?” left the mouth of the 400+ year-old FMC. This isn’t a solitary incident—she also calls people buttwipes, buttfaces, and buttholes—and seeing as I prefer adult characters to not talk like prepubescent kids, I decided to switch to the NSFW version. Unfortunately, even without the author censoring profanity, the 400+ year-old FMC still likes to use variations of “butt” when name calling—I.e., “buttmunching asswipe”, “butthole”, and “buttface”.

There is the addition of steamy scenes in the NSFW version. What’s weird is that one of those scenes—I only checked/compared the one—doesn’t exist whatsoever in the YA version (I.e., no fade to black or implied intimacy). In both versions they are having a discussion, but in the NSFW version the dialogue is broken up by the characters hooking up, whilst in the YA version the two sets of dialogue are merged into one.

I don’t know who made the decision to promote the two versions of the story under the labels “YA” and “NSFW”, but I personally find it misleading. The term “clean romance” better represents the “YA” version. And as for “NSFW”—it feels out of place. That’s just my unprofessional two cents though.

I will start this off by saying I had recently finished binging on The Vampire Diaries. When I had started reading this book, I couldn’t help but compare it with the tv series. It was definitely refreshing to get a different take on the vampire lifestyle.

I enjoyed Lisbeth’s “good girl” heroine-ism. Sometimes, the die-hard rule followers tend to be annoying, but Lisbeth’s view of following the rules is more of a morality standpoint. She recognizes the need for rules to live a healthy lifestyle. She also recognized the need (and potential danger) to break a rule in order to escape the prison she had ended up in under James’ rule.

I also enjoyed the unexpected camaraderie between Lisbeth and Knight. I’m looking forward to their story in the next book!

I really liked the different take on vampire mythology. There are two distinct “races” of vampires, those born (from a Succubus/human paring) and those turned by other vampires. It was a nice change from the normal vampire story.

I wish there had been more character building with the main character. She was on the run and into one conflict into another so quickly that I feel as if I didn’t really get to know her besides being a sarcastic vampire who likes designer clothing.

I will read the next in the series to give it a chance, as I am interested to see how the author builds upon the myths she has created.

**I received a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers, but it in now way influenced my review.**

The main reason I gave this book two stars instead of one is because I enjoyed the original take on vampire and werewolf mythology. I still have a lot of questions about it, but what I read I found very unique and interesting. It didn't feel like reading Twilight fanfiction.
I just wish this book felt like it had more weight to it. The climax fell very flat and you could hardly call the arcs, arcs. I enjoyed the dynamic between Lisbeth and Knight though. And I loved Sara, of course.

Adventure and action mixed with abut of romance. This is a wonderful and intriguing start to an amazing series. I cannot wait to see where the series goes. This takes a creative route with vampires and creates a wonderful through creative world building.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased, honest review.

I like Elizabeth Dunlap's writing style and how she pakced the story into different shape. It doesn't feel like Twilight. I found it really interesting, especially the myth of Vampire and Lynch. It's fun book to read, such a light story and have a fast pace. Sadly, the story feel flat, even though the plot in itself is fantastic.
