The rare experimental novel that really, really works for me. Porter is inventive and strange, playing with all kinds of textual, POV, and story conventions, but it's all rooted in real characters and a real narrative. The language is beautiful and it's actually about something. I am fascinated and impressed.

Lanny não pode ser lido sem vontade. É preciso estar aberto e entregar-se à leitura, é preciso estar dentro do livro para então ter uma experiência. Uma bela experiência!

There is a fantasy character in here who seems to talk mostly in random sentences. The second part is mostly a sort collective memory kind of thing - the best part IMO but ending killed the book. A lot of prose here reads like genuis; and a lot of it is unique but it was really difficult to be moved by the story so awkwardly told. The narrative genuis seems smothering the average story by trying too hard to impress. In the end, I could admire the author's writing powers, but not the work itself.

This was dark in a way I wasn’t expecting. I liked the story and folk horror of the book. I feel like there is deep meaning behind the overall story that will stay with me for a while. Good quick read!

Probably my favourite of the 3 Max Porter books I have read recently, but the ending still fell a bit flat for me. I loved the lyrical poetry of the descriptions which Porter excels at, Lanny was such an interesting character, the English village setting was great, Papa Toothwort was a deliciously creepy character. Part 2 was the standout, such a funny, clever and illuminating way of writing that is so interesting to read.
