I loved the idea of someone who seems to be from another planet and / or time period, but the book itself is just painful to read. I would cringe every time it was Kip's turn to speak. Also, the supporting characters just seem to show up and be there. The purpose of the old man seems to just be someone who saves them from the ship. It's not like the shepherd boy who is at least working in the mountains for a living. Still, it seemed a bit of a reach for the boy to have an adult sized coat lying around out in the field. Someone out there might like these books, but I don't.
