Not bad. I expected much worse. Actually the God squad kind of worked and were actually somewhat interesting characters. The Avengers themselves were not handled all that well, but they were at least recognizable. And the backup story of the first meeting of Thor and Hercules was completely okay. 3.5 of 5.

I liked this story better when it was called American Gods, Neil Gaiman was writing it, and it wasn’t terrible.

Bleh, I knew I wouldn't like this but I'm a stupid man who felt he needed to finish this run of Hercules. Don't read this, it's just so boring, how can Hercules be boring? The villain is just forgettable, some piece of crap hack of a villain who embodies modern technology and... old gods are useless... bleh... I want to like this, I do, I WANT a good Hercules story and I don't care if it's a 5 issue mini-series or a one-off. Just... just so disappointed in this book and in myself for reading it.

Gods of War had very little to do with the Civil War II and a whole lot to do with ripped shirtless men yelling at each other.

So not exactly my style.

That said, there were some parts of it I actually enjoyed. Hercules has some actual interesting character motivations - he's the original hero, but has been largely forgotten by pretty much everyone (including modern heroes). He's been a destructive drunk in the past so has a horrible reputation, which he's trying desperately to overcome.

The villains are also more interesting than the usual Marvel baddies. Okay, their motivations are completely lame ("sow chaos", blech), but the costume and power designs are very neat.

So this one was just okay, but much better than I expected!

Wow! An exceptionally well-done story in the middle of the Civil War II insanity! Only reason it doesn't get 4 stars is because it follows characters I don't normally care about. But this book was so well-written I had to look at it to see who wrote it and (of course) Dan Abnett! Of course it would be the D of DnA. God, I miss those days! All told, an excellently written and executed story!

Recommended for: anyone, no previous Hercules experience needed!
