For some reason I was NOT expecting so many ocean-themed poems so as you can imagine this collection was a DELIGHT. Ly’s voice is so casual, serious, whimsical by turns — this book feels like I lost cell service for a week and then woke up to it suddenly returned, and now I have a hundred or so text messages to read from my best friend who, at a certain point, started assuming I would never read them. Philosophical and conversational, these poems run the gamut from tender to flippant to dissociative in an effect that feels iridescent, like the betta tail on the cover.

I’m case you’re interested, Dessa’s Favourite Bangers from this book include but are not limited to: What He Saw, Lucifer Flowers, Future Excavation, Good Morning Stress, Eels, I Want to Believe in Pink Himalayan Salt Lamps, and Folklore.

I absolutely loved reading DREAM OF ME AS WATER by David Ly! I was so excited to read this book since I loved his first book Mythical Man. Both covers look so good together! These poems have a central theme of water and also touch on love, dreams and space. I loved the mentions of Vancouver like the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain platform. My fave poems are I Want to Believe in Essential Oils which is humorous right away from that title, Eels which makes great use of visual form and Way to Deal with Worry which is both funny and true.

It was so nice to meet David at the book launch and it was such a fun event! David let us know that he’s working on a third book and I’m so excited to read that one too!

Thank you to the author and Palimpsest Press for my gifted review copy!
