This was strong, character-driven writing and I loved the entire experience.
I LOVE the character of Enid. I have oodles and oodles of sympathy and empathy for her, and I found the handling of her mental health to be impressively expansive and nonjudgmental (at least, from the perspective of everyone BUT Enid). Her character felt like someone I knew well and someone whose discomfort I could see and understand. It was a real shame how often the MC encountered people who considered her so entirely alien as to make her adolescence a hellscape.
I was very close to giving this a 5, but I found something lacking in how things wrapped up. Normally, I find these moments to be an opportunity to appreciate that even real life doesn't always have the answers, but there were a couple of things that I think didn't entirely track.
Even so, those were only so small as to knock a fraction of a star off.
I already feel like I miss her world, and I think this author does standalone usually, but I want more of Enid. I believe there are still things to be said and paths to explore.
