I have read lots and lots of Lisa Jewell books. I have loved them all so when I saw this one by her I just picked it up. It was horrible. The first part was interesting but as it went on it became just one big party, whether set in 1920 or 1995. The characters were not even relatable. When the language could not rise out of the gutter and the book turned so smutty I finally just shelved it. I could not even finish it! Very disappointing!

I have read many of Lisa Jewell’s books and usually really enjoy them. She has a knack for domestic suspense and Before I Met You had all the ingredients that tend to make me love a book - an old house on an island, London, inter-generational secrets… But this one fell flat for me. The character of Betty bored me, I could see the resolution coming about 25% in, the rock stars storyline was not believable and again, boring. So, sadly a two stars - but I will keep reading Jewell because she is an amazing writer and just one flop (for me) does not change that.

I read this one after consuming four of Lisa Jewell's more recent mysteries so I was expecting this to be more devious. However, in spite of my expectations, this book still delivered. She is a great author who knows how to build character and plot.
This book was reminiscent of Jojo Moyes but, I felt, slightly more well-formed female characters. Definitely recommended.
