I didn't quite follow some of the plot toward the end, but that's probably on me. For reference, it kinda reminds me (in places) of <i>Oryx and Crake</i> by Margaret Atwood, <i>Future Home of the Living God</i> by Louise Erdrich, and the last story in <i>The Language of Thorns</i> by Leigh Bardugo.
