I did not knew it right from the beginning, but by finishing the book now, I know that I want more of Widdershins!

Been reading for months. Did not finish at 40%. Easily one of the worst books I've ever tried to read with an unlikable, Mary Sue main character and side characters with no personality. The timeline was confusing and uninteresting as was the worldbuilding.

This book blew my mind. Old gods, new gods, god outside of sanctioned worship, religion, thievery, and adventure all rolled up into one fantastic book.

Meet Widdershins, a young thief with a god on her side. Follow her as she goes through surviving in a city that has been her home all of her lives, and hopes to protect herself and her friends, and her god, from certain destruction. Well, at least destruction of life as she knows it.

Widdershins is a thief in the city of Davillon, who has help from her personal God Olgun. However, she has a dangerous past which could end up with her being arrested or worse. Widdershins is an excellent character who is loyal and mischievous and Olgun is brilliant because, even though we cannot see or hear him, I can picture him so easily. Thief’s Covenant is a well written fantasy book, which has likable characters and a good story line.

I wanted to love this. I didn't. I don't feel I know the main character as a real human yet--she's too much a caricature presently. But there's promise here; I'm interested to read a sequel.

I have read other books by Marmell, and even though this one is YA it's still bloody, but not that violent. How to explain, people die, a lot, but it's not shown as it would be in an adult book. Still, poor Widdershins.

At first I was not sure if I would like how it jumped in time, but it worked perfectly. Because each flashback showed me something new. First we got Widdershins as she is now, a young thief with few friends. Then there is poor Adrienne, alone on the streets, a pick-pocket among others. Then there is Adrienne, a young woman of means (and it sure made me wonder how she got there, but I found out.) Things that happened two years ago made Adrienne stop being Adrienne, and Widdershins was born. I liked her, she was tough and she has the best sidekick. A God who she can hear, but that the reader can't hear. But I could still see him in my mind and he was too funny.

The story is about a lot of people hunting Widdershins, for different reasons. But it is all connected, even if I will not say how and why. The story worked so well and there was even a surprise gasp from me, oh I loved that surprise. Bravo. But I am being tease now since I will not tell you what that was.

Being the girl I am I am hoping for a romance to blossom, how it would work I do not know, but it is there ;) I am looking forward to book 2 to see if anything happens.

Conclusion:
The ever so cool Widdershins made this my fav Marmell book to date. I liked that the book was dark, yet light and it did not end with a cliffie either which is always appreciated. But still I do want to know what happens next, because things are far from over. I would recommend this one to fantasy lovers, young and old.

Update:

I went into this book basically no expectations. I honestly didn't have a clue what I was getting myself into, I just knew it sounded awesome. A YA Sci Fi? Yes please! I've been looking for some good YA sci fi so I was really excited to pick this one up. While the actual plot is fast-paced and exciting, the way it is executed had me confused a number of times as well as made it feel like things were dragging. Windershins is a strong female protagonist, but there's nothing particularly relatable about her. I didn't feel connected to the story, nor the characters, but I definitely enjoyed it. Thief's Covenant is a quick and exciting read, with a slew of interesting characters, but the execution of the story fell a little short.

While I liked Windershin's character (she's smart, spunky, brave, and tough) I didn't really connect with her on any level. There are also a lot of secondary characters in the story which made it difficult for me to keep track of who was who. There isn't a lot of character development, making it harder for me to really grow to care about anyone in particular. Also, there's no romance. As you know, I'm a huge romance junkie, but there are only flickers of romantic interests here and there, but nothing substantial. I really wish that some romance had been incorporated.

In addition to there being so many characters the focus jumps from character to character throughout the story making it hard for me to really get into what's happening in one situation. I also found this confusing at times; I had a hard time remembering what was just happening and following the plot line, or I would have to back track just to figure out what happened. The story is definitely mysterious and intriguing, it kept me guessing. The ending is also incredibly exciting, and I can't wait to start False Covenant!

Although I did have some issues with Thief's Covenant, for the most part it was an enjoyable and quick read. There are some confusing moments, and I would have liked more character development, as well as romance, but I am definitely looking forward to the next book! If you're looking for a good Sci Fi/Fantasy YA, pick up Thief's Covenant!
