Part 2 of this trilogy gave much needed insight into the history of old queen and a bit about how she was able to learn how to switch bodies. The betrayal from within Charlie's own people was unexpected especially the person who it turned out to be.

woohhooo....Finally finished with this book. It was not better than the first book. But still Good book. Loved her struggle to do good for her country . To think about her people. Many secrets revealed. whom to trust and whom not to trust becomes more difficult. Didn't get to see much Romance and Max....But over all a good read :)

It was one of the most boring books I've ever read. Nothing really happened that was surprising or interesting. Plus there is a really weird love square going on. A love square is a first but really it's so strange!

Kimberly Derting's writing style is really not for me. I remember it took me about 3/4th of the way into the Pledge to really get into it. This book was just boring. I didn't like the flip in characters every some-odd chapters and the pace is too slow. Will read The Offering to see how everything plays out but definitely not invested in this story due to the writing.

After defeating Queen Sabara (kind of, no one knows her essence is still living along side of Charlie) Queen Charlaina is making the changes she has always wanted for her people. Ludania is no longer ruled by the class system, and they now speak the universal language of Englaise. While being the Queen has it's perks Charlie tires of being referred to as your majesty all the time. Though many of her people like the changes she is making for her country, there are also many people who oppose of the new classless society she has installed.

***Spoilers***
In the beginning of the book Niko Bartolo is told by his Queen Vespaire to kill Charlie. He agrees to invite her to the summit where she will meet her end. Charlie's only thoughts are to attend the summit with all of the other royalty hoping to trade with them to improve her countries resources. Along the way she is kidnapped by a man Floss and his son in the scablands. He tells Charlie and Zafir (her guard) that he heard of a plot to murder her and snatched her in order to keep her safe. They eventually make it to Queen Neva's land where the summit is being held, but Sabara's dreams are relentless if not revealing. She learns that Niko is immortal and throughout Sabaras reign they have found each other in each lifetime. She tries to ignore the feelings she has around Niko that aren't hers, but Sabara only grows stronger. While at the summit, Queen Langdon accuses Charlie of being Sabara and threatens to reveal her secret. Sabara takes control and kills Queen Langdon only for Niko to show up and take care of everything. He makes it look like she dies in her sleep and no one suspects anything. Brooklyn's father is one of the leaders in the dissention against Charlaina, and Sebastian the stable master at Charlaina's castle is a traitor. They all work together to kill her, but as they attempt to hold Angelina (her little sister) hostage, Charlie uses the Sabara's power to kill them all. Sebastion was long gone from the castle by the time they arrived, but his trail leaves off at the edge of Queen Elana's land Astonia. Eventually, Max forgives Charlie for kissing Niko since he knows it wasn't really her. At the end of the book Xander, once a friend of Elena is headed to Astonia to ask her of her involvement in the assassination attempts. It may lead to war between the two neighboring countries.

This second instalment in The Pledge trilogy is a complicated book to review… this will most probably contain spoilers, which is something I don’t usually like doing but I’m afraid I can’t explain my thoughts and feelings about the book in any other way…

First of all - I didn’t ‘love’ The Pledge… I gave it 3.5 stars as I found it lacking in a lot of places, but the storyline was good so I thought I’d give this one a shot and see if it improved any, and yes it did in some ways, but in others it was still sorta mediocre…

Most of this book is spent travelling… on horseback, train and boat, through the Scablands where we meet new, likeable and not so likeable characters. Charlie and her crew end up at The Summit, where she meets a host of Queens from other countries who are all rather odd, she discovers that one of her men is a traitor, internally battles the Essence of Sabara for control over her body, tries to resist Sabara’s lover Niko and ends up in a bad situation with Brook’s father which doesn’t end well!

Charlie and Max’s relationship doesn’t really develop much from the first book as they spend an awful lot of it apart and, unfortunately we didn’t get much character growth from Max either… there’s also something stiff in their interactions, maybe it’s the way the scenes are written but I don’t feel much connection with them from a readers POV.
Charlie vs Sabara – I liked this element of the story a lot… I found Charlie’s struggle for power over her mind and body to be well written… the dreams/memories that Charlie experienced gave us good insight into what Sabara’s life was like and I found myself empathising with her… I also felt the passion in her and Niko’s relationship and I’m actually hoping that they get a HEA of their own, without Charlie’s body present obviously!
I knew I was gonna like Aron… we get to know him a little better in this and I’m looking forward to more from him in the next book, along with Brook of course who is probably my favourite female character, I’m also hoping her and Charlie mend their relationship as it seemed a bit bleak when I finished this…
Unfortunately there was a distinct lack of Xander in this book but I’m hoping to get more in the next one. Also, the Assassin… I guessed who it was from their chapter and was a bit disappointed with how that situation ended… hopefully it will be resolved on the final one (fingers crossed)

Anyhoo… like I said, the storyline and writing were good but, there were a lot of inconsistencies and it was only the last 70% of the book where I couldn’t put my kindle down… it’s a nice Young Adult, Fantasy Romance and I will be reading the next one shortly to see how it ends…

Sooo...this book was kinda boring, yeah? I feel like this is going to be one of those series that could have been told in 2 books instead of 3. Nothing really happened here except a whole lot of Charlie being naive and stupid.

Ladies, you can be a strong female and still ask for help when you need it! Strong does not mean ignoring everyone else because "I can do this on my own". No, strength comes in recognizing your weakness and let me tell you, Charlie was not strong.

Following the events of the previous book, Charlie is now Queen. She's overwhelmed, to say the least, and unfortunately has the essence of the previous Queen, Sabara, inside of her. But instead of talking to people about this so that they can come up with some plan, she just decides to deal with it. It's the whole, if I ignore it then it will go away. Well, guess what, it doesn't. And it leads to chaos obviously because the old Queens long lost love makes an appearance and knows Sabara's essence is within Charlie. So of course, he pursues her. And of course, Charlie falls under his spell - forget about the man she loves back at home. She can handle this remember?

There are really no likable characters in this series. I only like Max and Xander because their history makes them interesting. At this point, I hope Sabara takes over Charlie completely because then maybe something would happen.

On to the final book! Yay...?
