Quick, funny read. A little more diverse than the usual Moscow/St.Petersburg-New York immigrant tale. Sharp observations of both Russian and American culture, very entertaining!

This turns into a very unlikely love story. Dark, quirky, sad, and funny.

Pretty OK book, even though I feel like there's a lot of "immigrant books".

"Petropolis" -Anya Ulinich (2007)

I picked up this book on a whim, interested because of the "hip" looking cover art. After reading the summary, I lost a bit of interest. But once I began reading? I was hooked. I liked especially how the story was broken down into separate parts to tell each leg of the main character's journey. While I couldn't necessarily relate to any of the characters, I think what I enjoyed so much was that I learned a lot and saw the world (if only momentarily) through the eyes of someone completely unlike myself, with a different background and culture and experiences...and that's what made it such an entrancing read.

An odd book, but I enjoyed it. The world of Asbestos 2 is fascinatingly grim, and I learned to love Sasha by the end of the book.

This book left me feeling really empty, I think because there was so little reflection. While one can argue that our lives, and therefore our stories, are nothing more than a series of events, the beauty and deep interest of our lives is found in the consideration and reflection of their context. Unfortunately, Ulinich never achieved this destination. These are interesting characters leading fascinating lives and yet they left me numb.
