Potential first contact enabling alien object meets politics, grant applications and the scientists who discovered it has to ask herself if it's humanity who are short-sighted about this momentous historic opportunity or her. Great deconstruction of first-contact tropes.

This was a surprise! It doesn't have fantasy or that much sci-fi but it kept me engaged. Just a snippet on someone's life. Also it reminded me of [b:The Martian|18007564|The Martian|Andy Weir|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1413706054s/18007564.jpg|21825181].

Well-thought out, but a bit of a let down, mostly due to the realism. Scientist identifies object orbiting the sun that is definitely alien in origin, and no one can agree about what to do next, what resources to devote, etc. I do think there would be more attempts from corporations to get around legal restrictions, tbh, but possibly we were just too early in the timeline for that to have come up yet.

The Best We Can offered one of the most interesting views of the first contact scenario, and upon reflection, I think the situation that Carrie Vaughn described in this story would be the most accurate one. :D
