On a quest for a golden grain to save his lands, a young lad who has never left his hometown finds himself learning the intricacies of the world -- the good, the bad, the banal.

Classic themes of environmentalism, nature, friend vs foe, young and innocent love.

Written and illustrated by Studio Ghibli cofounder!!! Based on a Tibetan story!!! Heavily inspired by the earthsea cycle!!! Explores the modern consequences and exploitative nature of globalization!!!! A story about a story!!!!! The journey is more important than the destination!!!!!
This year’s harvest of graphic novels/picture books is absolutely exceptional

Really beautiful illustrations with a story that left me needing more explanation. Luckily the afterword and author notes expand on that some.

A short, yet rich story. It's filled with a lot of the same ideas that come through in Miyazaki's films too.
