William Monk must find a missing man whose wife fears he was killed by his twin brother. Hester has been nursing at a fever hospital in the same poor area of London where the brother lives.
I enjoy this series, and in some ways, this was one of the best. The action seemed to happen sooner than in some of the books where the mystery is dragged out until the very end. Here I was able to figure out the solution to the mystery early though not the details of how it came together, but I still enjoyed the story very much. All the characters are always interesting though I'm becoming a bit tired of Monk's constant rudeness to Hester.
There was also a subplot where a woman accuses Monk of attacking her. Hester comes up with the solution for that but Monk doesn't even seem to be aware of it and any subsequent worrying or consequences are just left flat with no real resolution in his mind. I would have liked Monk to be aware of Hester's intervention on his behalf. Maybe it'll be resolved better in the next book.
It's still a great series.

I read many of Perry's Inspector Pitt books a while ago and enjoyed them. I think I read FACE OF A STRANGER which is the first Monk book a while back too. I remember I didn't like it as well as the Pitt books because it seemed to magnify everything I didn't like about Perry's style--mainly repetitiveness and referring back to previous cases. (At over 400 pages you really don't need to fill in space.) The case is interesting b/c it unusual and the subplot is good. The resolution is a bit disappointing and the characters aren't as appealing as in the Pitt series.

Too many coincidences and unfinished threads to give a higher rating -- but still very enjoyable.

Not the best book in the series but quite interesting. I enjoyed most of it and but the court room drama was a bit week compared to some of the other books.

I am a little annoyed at the finish of this book, both because I was hoping this was the book in the series where the relationship between the main character and his eventual wife would 'o'erleap the boundary' but no--and also because there was a distressing side plot, never really resolved for the main character, before the signature Perry abrupt ending!
All in all, vexing. But I will keep reading til I find that particular point in the series! And consider myself done with Perry.
