Read the first book in Estonian several times as a teen. I so expected the sequels but they weren't translated until much later. It is not until much later after having read AGOT that I found out GRRM endorses the series and considers it a forerunner of his own work.
So the expectations were really incredibly high. The book met them but did not surpass them. A carefully-crafted tale of historical fiction. Much better writing than a lot of the SFF stuff I normally read.
Would AGOT fans enjoy this as well? I think so.

Loving this series, have number three waiting to go on the shelf, so fast flowing and interesting with plenty of drama

The second book in the series centered on the Capet line of Kings, in medieval France. This second book begins just after the death of Philip The Fair. His son Louis is crowned and left with a Kingdom in debt, an unfaithful, imprisoned wife and an empty Papacy crown.
With the old King dead, his brother Charles, Count of Valois, accelerates his opportunity to oust his rival for royal control sees to fall of Enguerrand Marigny .
George R. R, Martin calls this series "The Original Game of Thrones" and I heartily agree. This is not a series for anyone who abhors the atrocities of the Medieval Age. Druon writes in explicit detail, not only of the gore, and accepted torture but of the conditions of life in the lower classes of people.

When one is slumping so hard that they're reading one book per...three month period at best, MAYBE it's not the best idea to focus on historical fiction so dry it gave them chapped lips.
Maybe?
I think I'm done with this series. Disappointing, because I REALLY do want to know more about this period of history. But if I wanted to be this bored, I would read an actual nonfiction book.
Sigh.
