This book is an excellent primer for writing a non-fiction book. It is formatted nicely, it addresses all the important topics, and it provides actually useful and actionable tips for the many aspects of becoming an author. Joanna Penn, who I'd not heard of before but seems to have a fairly prolific writing ecosystem, shares a lot of her personal successes and travails in the book, and this experience is useful to absorb. However, I've deducted a star because the book is so tightly tied with her other revenue streams (references to other books, podcasts, her website) that it's actually annoying. Despite being for too self-promotional, it is a useful book and would recommend it to other aspiring writers.

Any book on writing or publishing by Joanna Penn is likely to be a standout in its field. This one is no exception. She has a great wealth of experience, knowledge, practical information, encouragement, good cheer, and generosity.

2nd read:
I’m currently writing my next book, so I like to revisit Joanna Penn’s books on writing. If you’re a non-fiction writer, this book is fantastic, and I can’t recommend it enough. Not only does it give great advice about writing, but it also goes over just about everything you need to know about selling and marketing your book.

1st read:
This is actually the first book I bought from Joanna Penn, and as I started reading it, I realized how much knowledge she has in all areas of the writing process. So, as I read, I picked up some of her other books and read those as I was reading this book too. This is a fantastic book for non-fiction authors, but, if you're like me and have been reading her other books too, you really only need the first half. The second half dives into other topics covered in books like How to Market a Book, but I really don't mind because I need to hear information repeatedly for it to really sink in.

painful self promoting

The book is interesting and very helpful but OMG she constantly is trying to sell you all of her other stuff. She references her website and products too much. Can you say self absorbed much?
