To get a feel for a new author to me, I love reading their short stories. Whilst I am not a writer, I would guess that writing a short story is as difficult as writing a novel. You only have a few pages to get your story across and need to grab the reader's interest from the start. This collection of short stories were great, there was not one story that I did not enjoy and as it was set in New Zealand, I learnt more about the country.
This author had a way of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. With 13 short stories some with a common theme, there is a big choice to keep any horror fan happy.
For the purpose of this review, I will pick some of my favourites. A Good Cup of Coffee: I drink a lot of coffee, it is my favourite drink of all time. It is hard to say much without giving away any spoilers, but as you follow the MC as she is trying to give up coffee and the scenes she sees, would you give up your favourite drink.
Last Chapter: Following a lot of authors, one thing I see a lot of is the dilemma to kill off a character. Maurice is one such author and this story tells the lengths that one of his characters go to, to save his life.
Neighbourly: Whilst I am not one of them, some people who move into a new home, want to meet their neighbours and Maureen was no different, but what if the neighbours do not want to be friendly. Whilst I do not mind creepy crawlies, the descriptive scenes describing the creatures made me itch.
From the Deep: Living near the coast I have always loved the sea. I could not understand why anyone would not like it, but this story gives you the reason why a little boy was scared to go on the beach. The story was slow-paced building up the suspense until it was revealed.
I would encourage any lover of short horror stories to pick up this book and I am looking forward to more from this author. A great collection of short stories
