The illustrations through this book are beautiful and bring a rich depth in terms of colour and perspective to the story. A girl, whose only phrase involves variants of 'la' as she sings her way through the story, is looking for someone or something to support her. I think Kate's words at the back of the book capture its story beautifully:

'Even if we are small and alone and afraid, if we sing, sometimes someone answers us back.'

Enjoy the play between space and place and take comfort in the fact that although there are times when we may feel lonely, there is always hope that this will always not be so.

I had a cursory reading of this in a bookstore and figured I was missing something. Checked it out of the library, but didn't get much more out of it. Lovely idea and beautiful illustrations. I'm not sure that it's a book one would read over and over again.

I am a huge Kate DiCamillo fan. This is such a simple story with only one word repeated throughout "La." The little girl faces her loneliness and boredom to find a surprise at the end. Because the story is told primarily through the girl's expressions and the theme is so subtle, my 5-year-old wasn't really into it. She craves action and adventure, or at least humor. This is sweet and emotional. I still rated it 5 stars because it's a lovely story and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous.

The illustrations are absolutely amazing. I need more time with this book, not just at ALA!
Very sweet story, one that will be good to talk about.

update 9.29.17 - I've had more time with this beautiful book and I fall in love with it more and more with every reading.

Beautiful. Will make a great addition to a wordless/one word collection.
